Description & Features

First produced in the 1980s Mourne Classic is a lightweight tweed material. It comes in a range of natural soft blues, greens, apricots and gold, also known as ‘bawneen’ colours - the name of the undyed wool used to make waistcoats traditionally worn by labourers and fishermen.

The warp uses a mixture of different weight yarns unevenly threaded which gives a distinctive balance and texture to the material. Designer Gerd Hay-Edie likened the rhythm of the fabric and the oscillations in texture and tone to the continuously shifting position of the tide.

Mourne Classic was first used for curtaining material. The texture exudes warmth and light glows through the light weave and muted colour palette. Soft yet durable the fabric hangs with an elegant drape and flow and is equally suitable for couture use.

In 1984 the Mourne Classic range was chosen by the London Design Centre for their Design Selection Awards.
