Created by Gerd Hay-Edie and used by designer Robin Day for Hille in 1951, the Mourne Check was to become a signature fabric widely used for much of his furniture during his ten-year period designing for the brand.
Today, the Mourne Check is woven from a durable linen and wool mix and is available in our original mid-century colour palette of Tollymore, Gorse, Robin and Bilberry. The timeless design is perfect for adding a touch of the Mourne’s to your interior.
The Mourne Check Blackberry placemats evoke the captivating depth of nature’s darker tones, inspired by shadowed landscapes and the rich hues of twilight skies. Woven with a bold blend of black wool and black linen, these placemats embody a striking contrast that is both elegant and timeless.
The subtle texture of the weave mirrors the rugged contrasts of mountain terrain or the still waters of a lake at dusk. The black linen adds a soft, muted sheen, while the matte finish of the wool creates a beautifully balanced surface. Together, they offer a design that draws the eye, yet remains understated, perfectly capturing the essence of natural beauty.
Durable and sophisticated, the Mourne Check Blackberry placemats are as practical as they are stylish. The densely woven fabric ensures they can withstand daily use while maintaining their refined appearance over time. Whether added to a modern, minimalist table setting or styled with contrasting hues, these placemats bring a sense of timeless drama to your dining space, celebrating both the artistry of craftsmanship and the enduring power of classic design.
