14th, 15th + 16th August - Rug Weaving
THE WORKSHOP
Our traditional handloom weaving workshop, on the edge of the Mourne Mountains, and Carlingford Lough, offers a three-day immersive experience where you will learn the age-old skill of rag weaving alongside the craft of hand-twisting fleece to create your own rug or wall hanging. Guided by Mario and Karen, you will learn how to use rug-weight yarns, select and prepare materials, and practise two styles of rug weaving and mastering essential finishing techniques such as braided edges and knotting.
With all tools and materials provided, including a rich selection of yarns, rags, and locally sourced rare breed fleece, you can choose to begin one or several small projects in a friendly, informal setting complete with plenty of tea, coffee, and biscuits. Set in a bright and airy mill surrounded by the stunning Mourne countryside, you will work on traditional floor looms. The mill itself carries a deep sense of heritage, having been originally established by Mario’s grandmother Gerd Hay-Edie in the 1950s, the family still work with the same looms and warping machine.
By the end of the experience, you will leave not only with new skills and knowledge but also with your own unique handmade rug or wall hanging.
