First produced in the 1980s ‘Mourne Classic’ is a lightweight tweed material. It comes in a range of natural soft blues, greens, apricots and gold, also known as ‘bawneen’ colours - the name of the undyed wool used to make waistcoats traditionally worn by labourers and fishermen.
The warp uses a mixture of different weight yarns unevenly threaded which gives a distinctive balance and texture to the material. Designer Gerd Hay-Edie likened the rhythm of the fabric and the oscillations in texture and tone to the continuously shifting position of the tide.
Handwoven fabrics have self-finished edges or ‘selvedge’, made by the returning loop of the shuttle at each side. This cushion follows a simple envelope pattern that requires no buttons or zips, and highlights this distinctive handwoven feature.
In 1984 the ‘Mourne Classic’ range was chosen by the London Design Centre for their Design Selection Awards.
